Breast Reduction in Cancun | Reduction Mammoplasty at Blue Medical

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to decrease the size and weight of the breasts while improving their shape, symmetry, and position. The surgery also lifts the breasts and repositions the nipple-areola complex to create a more balanced, youthful, and proportional appearance.

Large and heavy breasts can cause significant physical discomfort and emotional distress. Many women experience chronic neck pain, back pain, shoulder grooves caused by bra straps, skin irritation beneath the breasts, difficulty exercising, trouble finding comfortable clothing, and decreased self-confidence due to disproportionately large breasts.

Breast reduction surgery in Cancun removes excess breast tissue, fat, and loose skin in order to create lighter, firmer, and more proportionate breasts while restoring comfort and improving overall body contour.

At Blue Medical Plastic Surgery, we specialize in advanced breast surgery techniques focused on both functional improvement and natural-looking aesthetic results. Every procedure is customized according to the patient’s anatomy, goals, and lifestyle.

Anesthesia

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure comfort and safety throughout the procedure.

Incisions & Sutures

Incision Techniques

The incision pattern depends on the degree of breast sagging and desired correction.

Periareolar Lift

  • Incision around the areola only
  • Best for mild sagging

Vertical Lift (Lollipop Incision)

  • Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
  • Common for moderate sagging

Anchor Lift

  • Around the areola, vertically downward, and along the breast fold
  • Used for more significant lifting and reshaping

Your surgeon will choose the most appropriate technique to achieve natural and balanced results.

Breast Reshaping and Nipple Repositioning

During surgery:

  • Excess skin is removed
  • Breast tissue is reshaped internally
  • The nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a more youthful height
  • Breast contours are refined for improved firmness and symmetry

If needed, the areolas may also be reduced in size.

Stitches

Incisions are carefully closed using layered sutures designed to support healing and minimize tension on the skin.

  • Some sutures dissolve on their own
  • Others may be removed during follow-up appointments

Specialized surgical techniques help optimize scar healing over time.

Drain Container

Drains are thin, flexible tubes designed to help remove excess fluid or small amounts of blood that can naturally accumulate after surgery.

The purpose of drains is to:

  • Reduce fluid buildup
  • Help minimize swelling
  • Lower the risk of complications such as seroma or hematoma
  • Support proper healing during the initial recovery period

Drains are typically positioned discreetly at each side of the breast, and and connected to a main tube that ends in a container. Patients are instructed on how to care for them at home, including measuring and emptying fluid output everday, once a day.

Drains are usually removed within a 7 to 9 days after surgery once the drainage decreases to an appropriate level. Removal is generally quick and well tolerated in the office setting.

During recovery, it is normal to experience mild discomfort or awareness around the drain sites, but this typically improves quickly after removal. Following all post-operative instructions carefully helps ensure proper healing and optimal surgical results.

Right After Surgery

Once you are fully out of the anesthesia effects, you will be offered liquids to ensure that you tolerate them. You will stay one night at the hospital to ensure proper pain management and care. The morning after the procedure you will be able to go back to your hotel / home.

Before You Leave the Hospital

Your plastic surgeon will come to assess your health condition and give you proper care instructions to take back home. It’s normal that you will be prescribed with  painkillers and antibiotics during the healing process. Your surgeon will give you a check up appointment during the following days to remove your stitches.

After the procedure, the plastic surgeon will prescribe pain relievers and antibiotics. It is recommended that during the next 8 weeks following the procedure you sleep on your back, avoid bending downwards, do not expose yourself to the sun, or stay in very hot places. Likewise, you should avoid exercising for a period of approximately 8 weeks. It is important that you follow the recommendations of your surgeon to obtain a good result.

Patients are advised to:

  • Wear a supportive surgical bra for 6 to 8 weeks
  • Avoid heavy lifting and upper body strain
  • Sleep on their back for the next 8 weeks
  • Avoid smoking during healing
  • Follow all post-operative instructions carefully

Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing and long-lasting results.

During the recovery period your surgeon will provide with a list of things to take care during this time. It is usually recommended for the patient to have a total of 17 days stay at the destination, in order to have proper after care and medical check ups with your surgeon.

Patients commonly experience:

  • Swelling and tightness
  • Mild to moderate discomfort
  • Temporary bruising
  • Changes in breast sensitivity

A surgical bra or compression garment is used for 6 to 8 weeks support healing.
