weight loss surgery in cancun , bariatric surgery

Weight loss surgery, can also be known as bariatric or metabolic surgery, is a treatment design to help patients lose weight on those who have tried years of diet and exercising and have been unsuccessful.

This type of surgery is a also an aid to improve the health of patients who suffer from diabetes type 2,  high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and other cardiovascular issues.

Obesity is a world wide problem, the World Health Organization stated that in 2016 there where over 1,900 billion people over 18 yrs old have obesity worldwide. Although obesity is a problem itself, it is also the cause of chronic inflammation, increased risks cardiovascular problems, heart attacks, diabetes, dementia, strokes, apnea, mobility issues such as ostheoartritis and it has also been linked with certain kinds of  cancer, such as breast, prostate, liver, uterine, colon, kidneys and more.

There are different kinds of weight loss surgery. Here at Blue Medical Services Cancun, our doctors offer two of the most effective procedures:

Gastric Bypass Surgery the GOLD STANDARD for weight loss surgery. This procedure intended for a weigh loss over 60 pounds. The surgery has different variants, over all it makes the stomach smaller and re-connects the intestines in a way that food doesn’t pass through an area where oils are absorbed. So acting in a double pourpose of having a small receptacle for food and not letting greasy food be absorbed by the body is a way to achieve the most weight loss possible.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery this procedure is intended for people who are overweight and are looking to lose 40 to 60 pounds. In this surgery 80% of the stomach is reduced and formed into a long tubular receptacle, so that you will feel fuller with a small amount of food.

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Restricts amount of food intake by making a smaller stomach
  2. Lowers your appetite by stimulating the release of the hormones GLP-1 and PPY
  3. Increases your metabolism
  4. Reduces fatty molecule absorption, by either removing or “by-passing” the intestinal area that is in charge of fat absorption

⚠️ LIFE AFTER WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

This kind of surgeries achieve dramatic weight loss in patients, but it is important to realize that it is not intended to be treated as an infallible cure for obesity. Patients must understand that obesity is a multifactorial issue, and factors such as mental health and physiological issues can also be part of the problem. Weight loss surgery is intended to help patients get to a healthier state, but if other issues such as mental health and maintaining a healthy diet and habits need to be addressed in order to maintain the surgical results. Surgery is not be the answer to all the obesity problems, and very likely the patient will regain their initial weight.

Massive weight loss after bariatric surgery requires to have constant health check ups, and will probably need to take vitamins to be healthy. Also fast massive weight loss will cause skin to sag and hang, and patients will need reconstructive surgery once the weight goal has been reached and maintained for at least 12 to 18 months.

During the recovery right after surgery your surgeon will have you on liquid and soft diet for a period of time. And the nutritionist will advise you on how to move on to a normal and balanced diet.

Exercise will be required 4 weeks after surgery once you have fully recovered .

Female patients are advised to avoid pregnancy for the first 12 to 18 months after bariatric surgery.

Although risks and complications rarely, they can include:

  • Anesthesia complications
  • Internal bleeding
  • Infection
  • Damage to other internal structures
  • Thrombosis
  • Leakage from the staples
  • Stenosis of the stomach
  • Heart burn
  • Vitamin and nutrient deficiency
  • Weight regain
  • Excess skin that will need to be removed eventually

In order to decrease the risks your surgeon will ask for a series of blood tests to ensure you are in good health for your procedure.

Following your surgeon’s recommendations will favor a good outcome.
